5 Tips for Storing Your Sourdough to Keep It Fresh
Share
Sourdough bread is a labor of love, and at Wright’s Daily Bread, we want to make sure every loaf you take home stays as fresh and delicious as possible. Here are five essential tips for storing your sourdough—and how to bring it back to life if it ever feels a bit “stale.”
1. Store on the Counter for the First 3 Days
After baking, sourdough is best stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. Keep your loaf in a paper bag, bread box, or loosely wrapped in parchment to maintain its crusty exterior while preventing it from drying out. Avoid plastic bags during this time, as they can trap moisture and make the bread soggy.
2. Refrigerate for Longer Storage (3–7 Days Total)
If you’re not going to finish your bread within the first three days, move it to the refrigerator. Wrap your loaf in a beeswax wrap or place it in an airtight container to preserve its texture and flavor. Keep in mind that refrigeration can cause bread to dry out, so it’s best to revive it (see tip #5 below) before serving.
3. Freeze for Long-Term Storage (Up to 3 Months)
For longer storage, freezing is your best friend. Before freezing, pre-slice your sourdough loaf and place the slices in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Pre-slicing is beneficial because it allows you to defrost and toast individual slices as needed, reducing waste and making your bread more convenient to enjoy.
4. Refresh Your Bread to Bring It Back to Life
If your sourdough starts to feel stale, don’t worry—it’s easy to revive! Simply run the loaf (or a large chunk of it) under cold running water, soaking the crust thoroughly. Then place it directly in a 375°F oven for 5–10 minutes. This process rehydrates the bread and restores its crispy crust and tender crumb, making it taste freshly baked.
5. Enjoy Your Bread at Its Best
Here’s a quick guide to sourdough’s shelf life:
• On the counter: 3 days from the bake date.
• In the refrigerator: Up to 7 days total (including the days it was on the counter).
• In the freezer: Up to 3 months.
By following these tips, you’ll ensure your sourdough stays delicious and satisfying from the first slice to the last. Whether it’s fresh from the oven, stored for later, or revived for a second round of enjoyment, Wright’s Daily Bread is here to keep your bread as amazing as the day you brought it home!
